About our name
A store where everything is for sale is sometimes called a Sinkel store. Where does that expression come from?
Sinkel’s first store was opened in 1822 by Michael Anton Sinkel at the Nieuwendijk in Amsterdam. Sinkel had been a peddler and introduced a new store formula. The merchandise was displayed in mirrored glass cabinets, allowing customers to view the merchandise from outside. All items had a fixed price, so it was not possible to haggle (you can in our store…). The store was so large that it could serve fifty people at a time, a huge number for those days.
In 1824 Sinkel opened a branch on the Oudegracht in Utrecht, stores in Leiden, Leeuwarden and Rotterdam followed. The stores were known for their enormous range. People could buy clothes, wallpaper, curtains, travel items and furniture there. Children mock this unusually large selection in a song, the oldest surviving version of which reads:
In de winkel van Sinkel is alles te koop
Daar kan men krijgen, mandjes met vijgen
doosjes pommade, flesjes orgeade,
hoeden en petten en damescorsetten
drop om te snoepen en pillen om te poepen.

There you can get baskets of figs
boxes of pomade, bottles of orgeade,
hats and caps and ladies’ corsets
licorice to snack and pills to poop.

Our unique items have been around for a very long time to get a beautiful patina. That’s why we definitely don’t do fast delivery, instant delivery, overnight delivery and all that kind of stuff. Shipping takes as long as necessary and sometimes we bring it ourselves to your doorstep.
Shipping can’t take place before the item(s) are paid in full and the money is in our bank account.

Prices exclude shipping costs, which do require 21% VAT and bank transaction costs.
